About UWR

Engineering
the next generation

UWR is the University of Wolverhampton’s academic-led, student-run motorsport team — and one of very few university teams anywhere racing in mainstream national championships.

The idea

Put students where the pressure is real.

Most university teams compete only in Formula Student. UWR was founded in 2014 on a bolder idea: give students a real race team, in a real championship, against professional and amateur teams alike.

The squad was set up by David Tucker, then Principal Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering, with racing driver Shane Kelly behind the wheel. A Formula Renault 2.0 came first. A Formula 3 car followed. Then Morgan, Praga, Revolution and Radical.

Throughout, the model has stayed the same. A professional driver races the car; staff race engineers mentor; and students — many of them in their first year — do the work.

What makes us different

Four things we believe.

Real championships

Radical Cup UK, BRSCC, ZEO, F3 Cup — not a university series. Real rivals, real stewards, real consequences.

Open to all

Motorsport, automotive, mechanical, aerospace, manufacturing, mechatronics and chemical engineers have all raced with UWR.

Allowed to fail

Education comes first. Students make the calls — and learn the most from the weekends that go wrong.

Career-first

Every role maps to a job in industry. Partners coach students on CVs, LinkedIn and recruitment.

Our home

Telford roots. Wolverhampton future.

For over a decade the team was based at the University’s Telford Innovation Campus in Priorslee, Shropshire — home of the workshop, the race car build bays and, since 2017, the “Race Team Wolf” statue by artist Nigel James Kilworth.

As the University consolidates its estate, engineering is moving to Wolverhampton. The former Springfield Brewery head office is being converted into an engineering centre with a new workshop, and the Motorsport and Automotive Engineering degree now lists Springfield Campus as its home.
