The story.
UWR was announced in October 2014 with plans to race a Formula Renault 2.0 bought from Fortec Motorsport, with lecturer David Tucker leading the squad and Shane Kelly driving. The car carried the team through its 2015 debut season and remains in use as a teaching and test car — prepared in recent years by the Formula Foundation programme for Foundation Year students and first-time engineers.

An unusual idea
Most university teams compete only in Formula Student. Wolverhampton set out to put students into a real, mainstream championship against professional and amateur teams — a high-pressure environment by design.
Which championship?
Contemporary press planned a Protyre Formula Renault entry; the University’s own page lists the 2015 Monoposto 2000 Championship. Either way, the debut year produced a first win and a season-end podium, according to the University’s news archive.
Still working
The car has never really retired. It is used for teaching, testing and now as the starting point for students who have never worked on a race car before.
