FAQ

Quick answers about UWR.

Do I need to study motorsport engineering?
No. Students from motorsport, automotive, mechanical, aerospace, manufacturing, mechatronics and chemical engineering have all been part of UWR — and non-engineering roles like finance, sponsorship and media are part of the team too.
I’ve never worked on a race car. Can I still join?
Yes. Most students join with no motorsport experience, and many start in their first year. The Formula Foundation programme exists for exactly this.
Do students drive the cars?
Race cars in UWR’s professional championships are driven by experienced professional drivers, which gives students a true benchmark to engineer to. Formula Student cars are driven by students.
How much time does it take?
It varies by role and season phase. Expect regular workshop sessions plus race weekends; the team works around your studies.
Does it count towards my degree?
UWR is an extra-curricular team, but project work, data and design can often feed into coursework and final-year projects — talk to your module leaders.
Is UWR a company?
No — UWR is a team within the University of Wolverhampton, not a separately incorporated company.
Where is the team based?
Historically at the Telford Innovation Campus in Priorslee. Engineering is relocating to the University’s Springfield site in Wolverhampton.
Which championships does UWR race in?
In 2026: Radical Cup UK with a Radical SR3 XXR, and the BRSCC Clubsport Trophy with a Morgan Plus Four.
How can my company get involved?
See the partnership page — funding, in-kind support and technical partnerships are all welcome.
Can I see the cars?
UWR exhibits at Autosport International at the NEC every January, and at other shows and events through the year. See events.
